The Endeavour Foundation is an independent, non-profit organisation that has been helping persons with disabilities since 1951. Today, the organisation helps thousands of people in more than 230 locations in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. The goal of Endeavour is to ensure that persons with disabilities are catered for in all facets of their day to day living, vocational training and adult learning.
The foundation was founded over half a century ago when a group of parents banded together to provide quality education for their children with disabilities, unwilling to accept the limitations that were placed upon them by society.

The prize home lotteries of Endeavour started as a means to earn funds for the accommodation support of persons with disabilities. All of the money raised go to the At Home With Choices program. This program offers individuals the opportunity to live independently while they learn to develop their life skills.
All of the homes built under this program are modern, accessible houses equipped with smart technology to help persons with disabilities to exercise more control over their lives.
Here are some examples of the technologies included in the homes:
- Intelligent home sensors to keep everyone inside the home safe
- Emergency call systems that are tailored to the needs of the inhabitants of the home
- Telehealth devices remote to easy monitor health conditions
- Mobile enabling apps that are great communication tools to help boost lives and skills
- Home control options to easily access and control home fixtures and appliances, such as lighting, air conditioning, etcetera.
- Speech generating devices so that people who have a hard time moving around can control fixtures through their voices
Living with Choices: Lives Improved by Endeavour
Several smart homes have been built by the At Home With Choices program since 2011. The beneficiaries of the projects continually express how much they enjoy living in these homes.
Endeavour recognises that living an independent life is important to everybody, and Alison Willgoss could not agree more. Alison moved into one of Endeavour’s At Home With Choices houses, and shares with two other women. She says that living in the house has changed her life for the better: “I am able to be more independent and stay home on my own and have quiet time to spend writing my children stories – I enjoy the silence.”
The At Home With Choices program gives people with disability more choice, control and inclusion in the local community. In Brisbane, Darrin Simpson is living his life to the fullest with good friends. “I like living here with the guys,” Darrin says. “When I come home we talk about the day, and I catch up with the guys next door.”
In another home in Rockhampton, good friends Kathy, Suzy and Judy relish living in a house that gives them a greater level of independence. Kathy says, “I like my new house. I’ve been waiting a long time.” Judy, on the other hand, said she likes “living in a new area and cooking for ourselves.” Lastly, Suzy expresses her joy and says she’s “happy because Judy and Kathy work well with me.”
Each of the homes are specially outfitted with the latest assistive living technology, which is then tailored to the needs of each person living there. In addition, there are also bedrooms for the support staff.
