The Smoke Subsidy Scheme is one of the most notable programs that the Deaf Lottery supports. During a fire incident, smoke detectors and fire alarms play a vital role in saving a person’s life. However, as we all know, the fire alarms we typically find only alert the residents through sound. Needless to say, they aren’t really much of use for the deaf and hearing impaired. Fortunately, they can purchase specialised smoke alarms that are fitted with a vibrating pad. They can place these vibrating pads under their pillows and they get activated whenever the smoke alarms sound.
It is disconcerting to know that these specialised vibrating pads cost up to $400 – an amount that can be burdensome to the differently abled members of the community.
