The money contributed by our esteemed contributors goes into many charitable activities which include.
Volunteer Surf Life Savers coming from the 311 clubs all over the country patrol the massive 35,000km Australian coastline to assist over 100 million beach visitors yearly. The cost of mobilizing such a big exercise can only be possible thanks to the wonderfully supportive community. The donations received are channeled into four major areas that require continuous funding i.e. rescue gear and equipment, first aid supplies, Life Saver training and Surf safety education programs for the community. Surf life saving being a non-profit organization, the Life savers only volunteer their time energy and time to patrol the beaches.
However the equipment and gear are expensive and this is where the public support is in handy. The Lifesaving equipment and rescue gear constitutes the biggest single expense in this massive exercise of Lifesaving services in the country. Lots of cash is also spent in maintenance of the equipment due to constant exposure to the sun, water and sand.
There is a steady increase in demand for our beach services, and we therefore need to churn out more and more lifesavers to be able to sufficiently cover all our beaches. Each Surf life saver must possess a bronze medallion. This involves rigorous training in various aspects including rescue techniques, CPR, first aid together with fitness testing. This must be updated yearly. It costs $800 to train a single volunteer; however the benefits are immense since maintaining saver beaches is paramount.
Each Surf Life saving club runs a well equipped First Aid room which must be replenished continually with supplies such as Ventolin, bandages and disposable sheets. Each club averagely spends more than $2,000 on supplies annually. This is what enables the organization to carry out over 30,000 first aid treatments annually. Not forgetting that each First Aid kit costs $400 and the rooms must be fully stocked all the time.
A considerable amount of money also goes into training the beach-goers how to stay safe while in the beaches.
